I’m Emma, the yoga instructor behind Dark Moon Yoga, & the Dark Moon Yoga Studio based in Lincoln, England.

I teach a few of styles of yoga: Hatha, the most “traditional” style of yoga focusing on pranayama (breath work), meditation & asana (poses), Vinyasa Flow, a more fluid style linking postures in to a sequence with the breath to “flow” & more restorative practices.

Dark Moon Yoga Studio opened in March 2020 & provides a permanent base for group classes, workshops & private tuition. I continue to teach in the community, at gyms, & at private events.

Classes are suitable for all levels of experience, all bodies types & people.

Pricing for private tuition or to run an event is available on request go to the contact form for more information or to request a quotation.

About me

I’m Emma the owner & main teacher for Dark Moon Yoga & Dark Moon Yoga Studio. I first started practising yoga back in around 2010 as an aid to weight loss. While the weight loss didn’t stick around the yoga did!

It became the type of movement I kept coming back to, & as I learnt more about the history & depth of the fully yoga practice (not just poses), I fell in love. I want my classes to be as accessible & inclusive as possible, I’ll always try to offer modifications & props to help where ever I can, & if I can’t I’ll go & research for next time.

Body size, age, “flexibility”, sexual orientation, race or gender identity shouldn’t be a barrier to learning yoga, find a class (even if it’s not me) that you feel comfortable & welcome in, if you do chose to come to my classes I hope you feel at home. I do very occasionally offer hands on adjustments or guidance, but these are not necessary if they make a student uncomfortable, let me know before or after a class if these don’t feel appropriate for you.

Having practised more seriously & regularly for the last 4 or 5 years I went on to under take my 200 hour Hatha Yoga Teacher Training, to both deepen my knowledge & bring yoga to more people.

A few random things about me: I have *quite* a lot of tattoos, a number of which are VERY nerdy, I play a variety of music in my classes, generally contemporary soft electronica, lots of Sigur Ros, & the occasional chart hit. I have x2 dogs & x1 cat, including a German Shepherd & a Norwegian Forest cat. I originally hail from the North East of England but settled in Lincolnshire some 10 plus years ago. I will occasionally sport home made leggings to class & my hair is always messy.

Lesson Plans

In person is great, but not always possible! Below are some of my lesson plans so you can practice at home/offline when you can’t get to a class.

My sketches use the Yoga Notes style by Eva-Lotta Lamm, I have a couple of her books/sketchbooks & they’re excellent, check out her page if you fancy sketching yourself.

Some classes go over x2 pages, the last pose will always be savasana (or corpse pose)

Testimonials

I’d definitely recommend these classes. I’ve just been to my 2nd one and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Emma is lovely – she really takes the time to explain the moves and is great at showing how to adapt positions to suit individual needs. I left feeling really relaxed and all stretched out. Lovely friendly atmosphere in the class too.

Lisa

Thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the relaxation session at the end of class. I’ve a nice ache in my muscles today though!

FAQ’s

Are your classes really pay what you can? Yep, group classes are donation based so pay what you can whether that’s £1.50 or £8.00 (or much more if you like!), you can pay different amount each week too, there is never a set cost.

Do you have a recommended donation? I’ve not been keen to give a recommendation, but the average ends up about £5 per class.

How can I pay? Cash or card are fine, I have a cute iZettle card machine!

How can I book a class? Go here to book online

Can I borrow props? Yes, I can provide mats, blocks & straps, if you’d like a blanket or bolster you’ll have to bring those along.

Can I bring my 14/15/16 year old to class? Contact me to discuss, I don’t teach children but late teens, especially if attending with an adult, may be acceptable on a case by case basis.

I’ve never done yoga before – what can I expect? Breath work, postures & poses (not the scary ones you see on Instagram), I’ll lead, demonstrate & guide you through these poses. I’ll offer modifications & props to help if a pose is inaccessible or uncomfortable for any reason. Relaxation & meditation – you can bring a blanket for the final relaxation which is usually 10 – 15 mins, guided by me. For some more detailed info go here

I’m really inflexible, can I still do yoga?  Of course! Being inflexible is the best reason to do yoga! I’ll always modify & offer alternative if a pose is too “advanced”. Regular practice will improve your flexibility & range of motion.

What should I wear to class? Anything that allows you to move comfortably, so tracksuit bottoms, leggings etc. I’d recommend layers so you can add/remove as you get warmer or colder. Be conscious you’ll be bending & stretching so check your waist band strength & the floppiness of your t-shirt! Bare feet are recommended, to avoid slipping on the mat. Jewelry is up to you – I find necklaces tend to bump against my face when practicing so remove or put up with the annoyance! Also read more here

Do you teach private individuals or groups? I can do yes, contact me to discuss pricing.

Where are you teaching? Go here for my current schedule.

Do you teach children? No, I do not have a qualification to teach children yoga.

What qualifications do you have? 200+ Hour Hatha & 250+ Vinyasa Teacher Training, from Aura Wellness, 100+ Hour Online Strala Teacher Training

Can you teach at my workplace/school/wellness event? Maybe, contact me to discuss options.
